The Sperm Whale Study is built in the register of nineteenth-century naturalist plates, with an aged-paper field, quiet linework, and the restraint of a library wall study.

It works best as part of a collected arrangement, especially with maps, botanical studies, architectural prints, and other pieces that make a room feel assembled over time.

Heather's Note

Natural history illustration developed in the age of exploration, when engravers were charged with making specimens legible to people who would never see them in person. The best of these images walk a line between the scientific and the beautiful, trying to be accurate while the medium keeps doing something more. This one has that quality: the linework is careful, the aged paper gives it warmth, and the subject carries enough strangeness to hold a wall on its own.
